Twitter Disables Search

First Track and now search

We’ve had to disable person search; it was being abused in ways that were detrimental to the overall stability of the service. We hope to bring out a more stable (and better) version but not in the short term.

Tough luck for all the new members who are just finding out about Twitter and disappointing for those of us doing the heavy lifting of evangelizing the Twitter gospel to the great untracked masses.

Makes you wonder how long we’ll keep doing such…

  1. I noticed this a week or so ago. It was disheartening to not be able to search. I've used it pretty effectively for a few of my accounts. But I guess with all things, if we can use it someone can abuse it.

  2. Lame, however, I never use search for people anyway.

  3. Same here but I know lots of the people I'm turning on to the service do. I hate it for them.As you said… Lame.

  4. Btw, I should have said this in the post, but in no way am I saying that search is as important as Track (or discovery as I like to conceptualize it).Discovery trumps search.I just find it unfortunate that in order to find stability (or solvency?), Twitter has to continually disengage useful parts of the platform.I can't help but think that search was taken off to lighten the server load in time for tomorrow's election result tweet-storm.

  5. stupid spammers.

  6. I was wondering why my RSS feeds for search went dark – this could drive me away. It makes it a less useful platform to me.
