GMail vs Backpack

Now that I’ve decided on Backpack over Evernote as my hub of workflow (see post below), I’m in love with the Journal feature. As a teacher, it’s going to be a fantastic “private Twitter” that will allow me to record, sort and even subscribe (via the RSS feed and Google Reader) to my insights and daily documentations.

I’m just thinking out loud here, but since I need to record most things on my mobile device (iPhone), would it be more efficient to use the Satchel app and iBasecamp mobile Safari hack orjust use GMail with pre-set labels acting as Basecamp pages and the Journal feature?

Hmmm… Will have to do some testing…

Sam, I have tried the iBasecamp CSS add-on for displaying backpack pages on the iPhone and it works fairly well. I have not had a chance to try Satchel, although I can say that Ben Gottlieb is an amazing programmer and have been using his many of his Stand Alone Software products since the days of the Newton. One question for you, is there anything you miss about Evernote that you now miss with the new workflow?

Chris, if there’s one thing I’ve missed about Evernote, it’s the Mac desktop client. However, since I use my school issued (and locked down) Macbook when I need a laptop, I’m just on Firefox. The Backpack web interface is superior to the Evernote web interface (to me). If that changes on Evernote’s side, I may consider going back. However, the 37signals guys, with their implementation of Rails, have created a very fluid and intuitive interface that I love to wade through during the day.I do hope Evernote continues to innovate, though. I’m still a premium member there and trying to figure out the best way to use the service. If I didn’t already have Dropbox, I’d consider using them for file storage since the service is so good at that. Maybe that’s still a possibility.
